Philadelphia Newspaper Lobby US Embassy Over Visa For British Boxer Marianne ‘Golden Girl’ Marston.

British Super Bantamweight Marianne ‘Golden Girl’ Marston, who was refused a visa in order to compete on the under card of Brian Cohen’s WBC Americas Light Heavyweight title fight on the 9th May at South Philadelphia High School, has learned that her plight has not gone unnoticed in the City that has been her adopted home for the best part of two years.

Journalist and boxing columnist Kerry O’Connor, who writes for Philadelphia newspaper Center City Weekly Press and Examiner.com, heard of Marianne’s plight and decided that something pro-active should be done to correct the matter. His solution was to start a campaign of support by encouraging readers of his column to write directly to the American Embassy In London to lobby them to reconsider Marianne’s visa application.
O’Connor wrote in his Philadelphia Boxing column on Examiner.com on the
17th April “Earlier in the week, boxing fans said goodbye to the Golden
Boy. Today, I'm reporting that we're being denied the chance to say hello
to the Golden Girl.

Marianne "Golden Girl" Marston, a Super Bantamweight boxer from London, England, was supposed to make her professional debut May 9th here at South Philadelphia High School.

However, after two years of playing by the rules, and filing proper paperwork with the American Embassy so she could come back and forth between Philly and London to train, the Embassy has denied her visa application.”

O’Connor then provides his readers with further information regarding Marianne and her plight before suggesting to his readers, “If you'd like to see Marianne get her visa, let the US Embassy know! Send an e.mail titled: "Let Marianne box" to Special Consular Services at SCSLondon@state.gov “

The Wednesday 22nd April issue of the Weekly Press will feature a more in-depth article by O’Connor, including an interview with Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham, to generate as much interest as possible in the campaign.

So what has made O’Connor leap to support Marianne and campaign on her behalf? "I found the circumstances surrounding Marianne's denial of a visa to be very unfair," said O'Connor. "She's always abided by the rules regarding her travels between the UK and the States in the past, so to say she might not return to London after the fight is ridiculous. She is just as deserving of a chance to box in the States as Ricky Hatton. Let her have her dream. Let her fight."

On learning of Kerry O’Connor campaigning on her behalf a very grateful Marianne said, “When I got a call telling me of the support coming from Kerry through his column I was blown away, I was speechless, what a truly wonderful thing to do.

In some ways I’m not surprised though as everyone there is so nice. Philadelphia is a very special place filled with such wonderful people. When I made the decision to train full time in America I had two choices, Philly or Los Angeles. What swung me to choose Philly was the people, they made me feel at home from the very first day I visited there. I know I was right to do so as they care about others. Kerry proves that, we’ve never met or spoken yet he has done this for me. Wow, that is something else.

I can’t thank Kerry enough as I love Philly and can’t wait to get back...and fight.”

If, like Kerry O’Connor, you would like to help Marianne fulfill her dream to professionally fight in America please send an e.mail titled: "Let Marianne box" to Special Consular Services at SCSLondon@state.gov asking them to reconsider Marianne Marston’s visa application. www.mariannemarston.com

It’s On! - Philadelphia’s Fight Of The Year - Brawl On Broad Street.

Philadelphia’s very own Brian ‘Bionic Bull’ Cohen (9-2) heads up anawesome 10 fight card when he faces Lafayette, Indiana’s Robbie ‘TazMexican Devil’ Tovar (15-4-1) for the WBC Americas Light Heavyweight titleat the Donna Cohen promoted ‘Brawl On Broad Street’ event at SouthPhiladelphia High School, Broad & Snyder, Philadelphia on the 9th May.

Cohen, who cuts an imposing figure due to his chiseled bodybuilder stylephysique, is odds on favourite to add another championship belt to hisalready impressive collection, which includes the USA Mid American, USAMid West, NABC, C.A.M. Land Indiana State Light Heavyweight Titles, eventhough he failed to capture the WBC USBN title in his previous outing inJanuary this year.

So why is Cohen such a sure fire bet? One thing for sure is it isn’tbecause his opponent a lame duck, anything but, as Tovar has an excellentpedigree and is a three time local champion at two different weights,Super Middleweight and Light Heavyweight. The answer to this conundrum canbe found elsewhere.

Firstly, Cohen’s January loss to Billy Bailey followed a freak asthmaattack bought on by the 95 degree heat in the arena that day. Promoter,Donna Cohen, is taking no chances of a repeat scenario on the 9th May byhaving an air-conditioned trailer placed adjacent to the arena for Cohenon the day.

Secondly, and probably more relevant, is that out of the Cohen’s ninevictories to date all but one were by stoppage within three rounds, withfour of those being by way of knockout. Now that’s impressive stats andsurely answers the question.

Supporting Cohen vs.Tovar will be a card packed with local talentincluding Super Middleweight Dennis Hassan (8-0), Heavyweight ‘Big’ JohnMercurio (2-0), Cruiserweight Pedro Martinez (3-2), Super MiddleweightDhafir ‘No Fear’ Smith (20-19-6), Featherweight Paul Fernandez (4-2-1) andMiddleweight ‘Mighty’ Mike Tibberi (7-1)In addition to the seven male fights there will also be three femalefights, although unfortunately the highly anticipated and heavilypublicized debut at this event of former World Champions, the legendary Smokin’ Joe Frazier and Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham’s protégé, British SuperBantamweight Marianne ‘Golden Girl’ Marston will not be one of them due tothe American authorities decision not to grant her a visa in time to takepart.

Instead Donna Cohen has bought in an exciting replacement in the form ofNo. 8 ranked Welterweight Olivia Fonseca (2-2-2) in addition toLightweight Lonnie Jackson Jr. (1-0) and the professional debut ofLightweight Liz Sherman.

Klitschko predicts long, slow defeat for Haye

By ROBERT MILLWARD, AP Sports Writer

LONDON (AP)—Heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko fought off a barrage of David Haye’s insults and interruptions Monday and vowed to send the outspoken challenger back to the cruiserweights with a 12th-round knockout.
Haye gave up his cruiserweight world titles to move up to heavyweight, where he has fought twice before, and challenges Klitschko for the IBF and WBO belts in Schalke’s football stadium in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, on June 20.
Promoters said Monday that 47,000 tickets have already been sold and they expect a sellout of up to 70,000.
The fighters came face-to-face at a second news conference in a swanky London club with the 33-year-old Klitschko (52-3) still unhappy with the behavior of the 28-year-old British fighter.
Haye (22-1) continues to wear a T-shirt with a drawing of him holding the dismembered heads of both Klitschko and his brother, WBC champion Vitaly Klitschko.
“David Haye provoked me by cutting my head off in a photo in a men’s health magazine. He provoked me and I took the fight,” Klitschko said. “So I’m asking what’s going to be next? Is he going to cut off my dad’s head, my mom’s head? Maybe he will attack my religion, my race. This is over the edge. This is not sport.”
While Haye continued to hurl insults at the Germany-based Ukrainian and frequently interrupted him at the news conference, Klitschko was not distracted.
“This man was good as his job as a cruiserweight and that’s where he has to stay,” Klitschko said. “He’s had only two fights in the heavyweight division and now wants to be champion.
“You listen to me about what I say,” the Ukrainian said amid interruptions. “I’m telling you this guy is going to be punished, jabs, jabs and more jabs in the face for 12 rounds.”
Turning to Haye, he said: “And, in the 12th round, I’m going to knock you out.”
Haye, who is three inches shorter and likely to be up to 30 pounds lighter, hopes his superior speed and punching power will counter Klitschko’s bulk and jabbing skills.
“It’s not going to be a fight, it’s going to be a massacre,” Haye said. “In my way I’ve got this big dude, he’s got a decent jab. He’s physically got a lot of different tools but I’m going to turn them against him. His jab, jab, grab tactics that he’s been doing right through his career will not work against me.
“I am going to make him fight. He’s a fighter who doesn’t like to fight and doesn’t stand in the ring. A true heavyweight should go to war.”
Haye only began fighting as a pro in December 2002 after Klitschko had already made five defenses of the WBO title. But the British fighter ridiculed the champion’s choice of opponents.
“I’ve seen the guys who’ve turned up to fight Wladimir. Only two guys have really turned up with any ambition and in shape and to knock this guy out,” Haye said. “Corrie Sanders turned up and threw punches and knocked him out (in two rounds). Lamon Brewster did the same thing (TKO in five). The others were just there to make up the numbers.”
Klitschko later made up for that loss to Brewster by stopping him in six rounds in July 2007. His last defense was a seventh round stoppage of Hasim Rahman last December and he has won his last seven world title fights.
Klitschko said he had hoped the fight would be in London at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge stadium but, because his promoters won purse rights, it will take place in Germany. The Schalke stadium was the venue for the 2004 Champions League final in which FC Porto beat Monaco 3-0, and also where England went out of the 2006 World Cup in a penalty shootout against Portugal.
Bernd Boente, managing director of Klitschko’s management group, said there was huge interest in the fight as soon as the tickets went on sale last week.
“We started ticket sales on Friday of last week and on the first day we sold 30,000,” Boente said. “Today we have 47,000 tickets sold. We are very sure that the fight will be sold out. I think we will have something between 60-70,000 on fight night.”

Bruce ‘Lionheart’ Scott Fires Salvo At Prizefighter 7 - The Cruiserweights

Former British, Commonwealth and WBU International Cruiserweight ChampionBruce ‘Lionheart’ Scott, along with six of his fellow seven contestants inPrizefighter 7 - The Cruiserweights tournament, that takes place at EarlsCourt on Tuesday 19th May 2009, were all together for the first time inone place when they attended a press conference held by the promoter ofthe series, Barry Hearn of Matchroom Sports, aboard HMS Belfast moored onthe River Thames close to the iconic Tower Bridge in London.
Bruce’s six fellow combatants, all former champions, as is the seventh,Mark Krence (who failed to make the press conference having had themisfortune of being stuck in a traffic jam on the infamous “car park”laughingly called the M1 Motorway) were Commonwealth Champion DarrenCorbett (27-4-1), British and European Champion Terry Dunstan (20-2),British, Commonwealth and European Light Heavyweight Champion Dean Francis(30-3-1), British Champion John ‘Buster’ Keeton (26-16), British andCommonwealth Light Heavyweight Champion Neil Simpson (26-18-1) and BritishSouthern Area Champion Micky Steeds (12-4).
The proceedings were entertainingly opened by Barry Hearn, Chairman ofMatchroom Sports, who praised the fighters sat each side of him beforesaying “Boxing in some ways has lost its way and gone a bit stale.Prizefighter tries to turn the situation around by making it very easy tounderstand. Eight great fighters, eight former champions coming togetherfor seven fights in one night.
One thing about Prizefighter is it’s exciting; these guys get in there andare going to be doing a job we would all like to do – but it’s theloneliest job in theworld. I’ve not seen a bad Prizefighter fight. I’ve seen one or twofighters try to nick it and get beaten but never a bad fight.
This is basic entertainment boxing and bringing in a crowd that normallygoes to boxing. It’s a cross between professional boxing, UFC, a littlebit of thecontender thrown in and a bit of 20/20 Cricket - it’s all action. Each one of these fighters is a main event fighter and the crowd at EarlsCourt are going to be entertained. When the bell goes it’s going to becarnagebecause they don’t know any other way.
I thought the first Prizefighter Heavyweights was always going to be acracker but this promises to be even better. Everyone is a puncher andthat’s what makes Prizefighter interesting so these guys pick themselves.I think this will be pound-for-pound the best Prizefighter show we’ve everdone and I’m excited about this like never before.”
No sooner had Barry Hearn finished than the first questions were asked ofthe fighters and it came as no surprise that they were directed atpossibly the most famous name, besides the eminent Mr Hearn, seated there, the ever likeable and entertaining London-based Jamaican Bruce ‘Lionheart’Scott.
Bruce was asked “you haven’t fought in three years, will you be ready?” towhich he replied, “It depends on which way you look at it. I’ve beentraining hard with the excellent John Rooney. I’m training very hard, veryvery hard. Training harder than ever in my life.”
The next question asked was where he is training for the tournament, towhich Bruce replied, “I’m training near London Bridge, I’m at Gleason’sGym”
All nice and tame stuff but those gathered aboard the historic warshipknew as soon as the third question was asked things were going to startgetting a bit more lively as Bruce was asked about his fellow contestants. The mischievous Jamaican smiled before launching his first shot across hisoppositions’ bows, “I’ve knocked some of them out. I’m not worried aboutthem. They know who they are. I’m not joking, I’m coming for it.”
Bruce’s second salvo was directed at Terry Dunstan, who was sat next tohim, when asked if he had sparred with him when they were both training atthe same gym, “No, no he was to scared to spar me. No he wouldn’t sparwith me. I had just come from Jamaica then, I was raw.” He said, beforeearnestly adding “You can ask him, he didn’t want to spar.”
A shell-shocked Terry responded, “He (Scott) must have a better memorythan me or I must be punch drunk.”
Bruce fired a range-finding tracer, “He has the fastest knockout inEngland I think, yeah the European Championship I think.” quickly followedby a double barrel shot “I think it’s the only person he knocked out(Scott laughs) as my daughter punches harder than him. (Scott Laughsagain, as does everyone in attendance)”
(For the record Terry Dunstan has 4 KOs and 8 TKOs in his career)
Terry spins round and let’s off his own quick-fire salvo, “He (Scott) saysI can’t punch and he says I ain’t knocked anyone out . If he (Scott) saysI ain’t knocked anybody out either he’s punch drunk or I’m punch drunk.”
Darren Corbett decides it’s time for him to to lock Bruce into his sightsbefore firing a warning shot in the Jamaican’s direction, “Bruce, you saythat you knocked people out. The referee stopped our fight in the tenth. Iwas ahead after three rounds. I hope we meet in the first round (of thePrizefighter Tournament) because...”
But before Darren could get another word out Terry Dunstan steams portside of the Irishman and diplomatically suggests, “Save it for the 19th.”to prevent a full scale battle breaking out.
As the fog of war subsided, Dean Francis decided it was time to declarehis position, “For me this is a last-ditch attempt to fulfill my dream ofwinning a world title,” before firing his own warning shot over hisopponents’ collective bows, “I’m going in there to beat everyone. If BruceScott thinks he will beat me then he has got another think coming. I’m acruiserweight but a lot of these guys are heavyweights having to lose theweight.”
Micky Steeds diplomatically saved further battle cries by saying, “It’s agood competition and you can see that by the names in it. If you go allthe way you can get three good names on your record all in one night, andthat may normally take a couple of years.” before lightening theproceedings further when he added, “It’s fast and furious but I’m theyoungest and prettiest here.”
Continuing on the lighter theme late arrival John Keeton, who will becelebrating his birthday the night of the Prizefighter tournament, raisedthe biggest laugh of the day when he said “It’s absolutely fantastic andI’m proud to be in it. There are a lot of old faces who have done a lot ofdamage in the past to me.” before adding after the laughter had died down,“But it’s an honour to have this opportunity of boxing in Prizefighter. This gives everyone a boost to their careers.”
Directly after the entertaining press conference Bruce walked the shortdistance to Gleason’s gym and got straight back to work preparing for thePrizefighter tournament. One thing is clear although he may have said “I’mcoming for it” in a light hearted manner, the reality is he means it 100%.
The Prizefighter series is a knock-out boxing tournament created by boxingpromoter Barry Hearn and aired on Sky Sports. The format has an initialeight fighters compete in four quarter-finals with the chance of fightingtheir way into a final fight for a chance to win a main prize of £25000.All contests take place on the same evening and consist of 3 x 3 minuterounds.
Take note now so you don’t kick yourself afterwards. Prizefighter 7 - TheCruiserweights is a don’t miss event and will be held at Earls Court inWest London on Tuesday 19th May 2009

Donaire stops Martinez to keep IBF crown

By AARON FAVILA, Associated Press Writer

MANILA, Philippines (AP)—Filipino Nonito Donaire retained his IBF flyweight title on Sunday, stopping American challenger Raul Martinez in the fourth round.
Donaire (21-1) pummeled Martinez (24-1) with rapid punches to the head, sending him to the canvas for a fourth time in the bout before the referee stopped the fight 2:42 into the fourth.
“I just did what I had to do,” said the 26-year-old Donaire, who had vowed not to fail the big hometown crowd at Manila’s Araneta Coliseum.
Donaire floored Martinez twice in the first round and once in the second. In the fourth round, Martinez took a sharp left uppercut and fell backward, prompting referee Pete Podgorski to stop the match. The Filipino crowd roared, chanting Donaire’s name.
Martinez, from San Antonio, Texas, waved a Philippine flag after Donaire’s victory.
Former Philippine president Joseph Estrada sat in the ringside and congratulated Donaire after the fight.
In another bout, American Brian Viloria (25-2) stopped Ulises Solis (28-2-2) of Mexico with a right to the jaw in the 11th round to become the new IBF light flyweight champion.
The Hawaii-born Viloria is of Philippine ancestry. He raised his arms in triumph and shed tears as Solis lay on the canvas.
“He’s not a Filipino executioner no more. It ended today,” the 28-year-old Viloria said of Solis, who had defeated three Filipino fighters in the last two years.
President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s office said she was “ecstatic” over the victories by Donaire and Viloria, adding that Philippine boxing was going through a “renaissance.”

PRIMM, Nev. (AP)—Undefeated Yuriorkis Gamboa captured the interim WBA featherweight championship, stopping Jose Rojas in the 10th round of a bout scheduled for 12 Friday night.
Gamboa, now 15-0 with 13 KOs, pelted the left-handed Rojas throughout the bout at Buffalo Bill’s Resort & Casino and dropped him with a right to the head in the fifth round. Gamboa, of Miami, pinned Rojas in a corner and was pummeling him when referee Jay Nady halted the one-sided bout at 1:31 of the 10th round.
Gamboa, who won a gold medal for Cuba at the 2004 Athens Olympics, was comfortably ahead 90-80, 90-81 and 89-81 on the three judges’ scorecards through nine rounds.

Durham police say Friday that prosecutors decided not to proceed with any charges. Saunders was arrested along with his girlfriend in November after a police dog found an estimated $18,000 worth of cocaine in his garden in Sedgefield, England.
Saunders was a gold-medal prospect in the light-welterweight division at the Beijing Olympics, but lost his second fight.

Haye provokes Klitschko with T-shirt stunt

By NESHA STARCEVIC, AP Sports Writer
GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany (AP)—
David Haye may have taken pre-fight publicity stunts to a new level, and heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko intends to make him pay for it.
Haye showed up at a news conference Thursday leading up to their fight wearing a graphic T-shirt depicting himself standing in the center of a ring over the bodies of Klitschko and his brother Vitali, holding their dismembered heads in the air.
“There is no chance the fight will go to 12 rounds, unless he gets a chin transplant,” Hayes said. “It will be his last fight.”
Klitschko defends his IBF and WBO belts against the former cruiserweight champion on June 20 at Shalke’s stadium, where a crowd of 60,000 is expected.
“That is terrible. It’s unspeakable, it’s impudent,” Klitschko said of the T-shirt. “I am going to give him a lesson in good behavior. First, I wanted to knock him out in the first round. But now I want to make it a long process and I want to enjoy it, and then I will knock him out in the 12th round.
“I hope he doesn’t go down too early.”
Klitschko is usually well-mannered and rarely makes knockout predictions, but Haye hit a nerve—and he didn’t stop there.
“When I beat him to bits, he will retire,” Haye said. “Vitali will throw in the towel to save you, he will pick you off the floor.”
The British challenger unified the cruiserweight division before moving up to heavyweight, where he knocked out Monte Barrett last November.
Haye (22-1, 21 KOs) weighed 215 pounds for that fight and will be giving up close to 30 pounds when he finally steps into the ring against the 6-foot-6 champion.
“He’ll find I’m a real heavyweight,” Haye said. “My weight is not important as long as I am fit, healthy and motivated—205 pounds is enough to fight Wladimir. I’ve been losing weight all my career. Now, I’m coming in at my normal weight.”
The 28-year-old Haye, who is five years younger than Klitschko, criticized the Ukrainian’s previous opponents—even though he’s beaten all the biggest names in a weak division.
Klitschko (52-3, 46 KOs) hasn’t lost since a stunning knockout to Lamon Brewster in April 2004, a defeat he avenged two years ago. Only twice during Klitschko’s run of 10 straight wins has a fight gone the distance.
“I am in my prime. I want to fight him now because otherwise he’ll be running if I keep knocking people out,” Haye said. “He has been fighting over-the-hill people. He will realize I am the real deal. I’ve watched a lot of him and I’m not impressed—jab, jab, jab, grab. He’s been fighting people so old and out of shape they fall over after a few rounds.”
Klitschko promised that Haye will pay for his relative youth and inexperience.
“He has made himself very loud, but he is young and he still doesn’t know how to keep his emotions in check,” Klitschko said. “I am really looking forward to this fight. I have been waiting a long time.”
The outspoken Haye, who has a boastful reputation and is known for getting under the skin of his opponents, said it was his idea to design the black T-shirt. Last year, he posed for a photo montage with a mock head of Wladimir.
“I wanted to get his attention, to show that I’m in business,” Haye said. “And now I’ve declared war on the entire family, Vitali will have to avenge his brother, and then I’ll beat him too.”
