Williams batters Winky for unanimous decision

By GREG BEACHAM, AP Sports Writer
LAS VEGAS (AP)—Paul Williams battered Winky Wright with an avalanche of punches to win a unanimous decision Saturday night, dominating a meeting between two much-avoided middleweights.
Williams (37-1, 27 KOs) worked Wright’s formidable defensive posture like a speed bag from the opening bell at the Mandalay Bay Events Center, relentlessly breaking down the former champion in Wright’s return from a 21-month ring absence.
With so many punches to block, Wright (51-5-1) simply didn’t have time to land enough scoring blows against his taller, longer opponent. Williams barely appeared tired by the closing bell, chasing Wright around the ring relentlessly.

Heavyweight Arreola stops McCline, stays unbeaten

By GREG BEACHAM, AP Sports Writer
LAS VEGAS (AP)—Chris Arreola stopped Jameel McCline in the fourth round Saturday night, passing the biggest test in the top American heavyweight prospect’s unbeaten career.
Arreola (27-0, 24 KOs), the 28-year-old brawler hoping to become the first heavyweight champion of Mexican heritage, finished impressively against his most accomplished opponent to date on the undercard of Winky Wright’s middleweight bout with Paul Williams.
McCline, a 38-year-old veteran who has fought for four heavyweight titles, crumpled to the canvas after taking two big right hands to the head midway through the fourth. Although he raised himself to one knee, McCline (39-10-3) couldn’t stand before referee Tony Weeks finished his 10-count at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.
“I took good punches, and I gave some good punches,” Arreola said. “I want to fight the best. I want to convince the fans that I can fight the best, but in order to fight the best, I have to fight who’s currently best, and I believe Jameel McCline is.”
Arreola is widely admired for his punching power and mean streak, but he also has been dogged by concerns about his dedication and conditioning. He weighed in for this fight at a paunchy 255 pounds on his heavily tattooed frame, but he moved plenty well enough to handle McCline, who also carried plenty of superfluous weight on his 6-foot-6 frame.
“He beat me. Is he blazing? No, but he beat me,” said McCline, who has lost four of his last five fights. “What right do I have to say he isn’t blazing?”
Arreola has called out the division’s biggest names, including both Klitschko brothers, and he could soon work his way into a mandatory title shot.
Shawn Estrada, the East Los Angeles super middleweight who fought at the Beijing Olympics, remained perfect in four fights as a pro with a third-round stoppage of Omar Coffi. Although pushed past the first round for the first time, Estrada got three knockdowns before Coffi’s corner stopped the fight.
Danny Garcia, a 140-pound Golden Boy prospect, also improved to 12-0 with a one-sided decision over Humberto Tapia.

Nashiro retains WBA super fly title

OSAKA, Japan (AP)—Japan’s Nobuo Nashiro stopped compatriot Konosuke Tomiyama in the eighth round Saturday to retain his WBA super flyweight title.
Tomiyama knocked Nashiro to the canvas in the first and sixth rounds but the champion recovered and the referee stopped the bout 1 minute, 22 seconds into the eighth round after a flurry of punches overwhelmed the 25-year-old challenger.
The 27-year-old Nashiro improved to 13-1 with eight knockouts while Tomiyama dropped to 18-2 with six KOs.
Nashiro first won the title in 2006 with a TKO win over Martin Casillo, but lost it in his second defense to Alexander Munoz in a unanimous decision. He reclaimed the belt in September last year with a split decision win over compatriot Kohei Kono.

DONETSK, UKRAINE (AP)—Vyacheslav Senchenko, Ukraine, outpointed Yuriy Nuzhnenko, Ukraine, 12, to claim the WBA welterweight title.

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP)—David Lopez, Mexico, outpointed Ossie Duran, Providence, R.I., 10, junior middleweights; Hector Sanchez, Puerto Rico, outpointed DeMarcus Corley, Washington, 8, junior welterweights.

Former champ Lacy beats Griffin by decision

TAMPA, Fla. (AP)—Former super middleweight champ Jeff Lacy won a close majority decision over Otis Griffin on Friday night in front of a hometown crowd, his first fight since losing to Jermain Taylor last year.
Lacy started strong and opened a small cut over Griffin’s eye in the second round with a strong overhand right, but Griffin appeared to take control over the middle rounds.
Lacy (25-2) had to overcome swelling around both his eyes the final three rounds, closing the eighth and ninth with strong flurries. In the 10th, both fighters landed big punches, with Griffin (19-5-2) closing the round with two uppercuts and Lacy connected with a straight right.
Two judges scored the fight 96-94 and 97-93 for Lacy, while the third had it a draw.
“I have to give it up to Griffin for a tough fight,” Lacy said.
Afterward, Lacy called out former pound-for-pound champ Roy Jones Jr., who was sitting in attendance but didn’t give an immediate answer.
“I would love to fight Roy Jones Jr., anytime, here in Tampa,” Lacy said.
Griffin thought he was the winner and lobbied for himself to fight Jones this summer.
“It’s a shame that in this sport you can get robbed in somebody’s hometown,” Griffin said. “I was landing the harder, cleaner punches throughout the fight. Roy should be fighting me.”
